12 Forklift Safety Tips for Accident Prevention

Forklift Operator Training

Forklift is a powered industrial lift truck used to transport materials on short distances from one place to another place, to stack and unstack, to load and unload materials.

Forklifts are among the most frequently used pieces of equipment in the workplace. Unfortunately, accidents involving forklifts are also quite common.

Causes of accidents in forklift operations

There are a variety of factors that can cause forklift accidents, including a lack of training or inadequate training, carelessness by operators, improper tools and attachments, and failure to maintain the forklift.

Typical accidents involve forklift tip-overs, which can lead to operator fatalities, and forklifts pinning and crushing individuals against another surface.

Having appropriate safety measures in place is critical to prevent these injuries and reduce the risk of fatalities. Below are a few ways you can avoid serious injuries and accidents when working with forklifts.

Safety tips for preventing accidents in forklift operations

  1. Get forklift safety training

OSHA requires that every forklift operator be trained and certified to operate a forklift, and the operator’s performance be evaluated on the provisions of 1910.178(l)(3) every three years.

2. Post forklift speed limit signs

Forklift speed limit signs should be posted around the facility and enforced. Imposing speed limit can prevent accidents, equipment damage and reduce maintenance cost. Make sure forklift drivers know the rules and follow them.

3. Keep forks low when traveling with a load

OSHA regulations encourage forklift operators to carry loads as near to the ground as possible, 4-6 inches from the ground. This position is high enough to reduce contact with uneven areas, slight slopes, inclines and debris on operating surfaces.

4. Slow down the forklift before turning

Turning a corner too fast can cause the forklift to tilt. To avoid tipping, slow down before the turn and maintain a gradual speed through the entire rotation.

5. Maintain a safe area for forklift operation

Keep doors and intersections clear of obstructions. Remove clutter from aisles. Mark forklift areas with wall signs and floor markings. Maintain a clean loading dock.

6. Drive the forklift backwards

If you cannot see past the load, drive the forklift backwards. Avoid carrying loads that impair your visibility. If needed, ask someone to direct you.

7. Balance and secure the load

When loading the forklift, make sure the load is secured and balanced on the forks. For additional safety, always tilt forks back when carrying a load.

8. Inspect the forklift regularly

At the beginning of each shift, follow a forklift inspection checklist to make sure it is in safe working condition.

9. Pay Attention to the Forklift’s Stability

Forklifts are built on a three-point suspension system, called the “stability triangle” that operators must stay within to prevent it from tipping over. The heavier the load, the further out the centre of gravity is from the load centre, decreasing your forklift’s lifting capacity.

10. Maintain the forklift capacity

Be aware of the capacity of your forklift and any attachments used. Avoid hauling weight that exceeds the counterweight of the forklift. Overloading a forklift can cause the rear wheels to rise off the ground and the whole machine to fall over, causing injury to personnel and damage to the equipment and materials.

11. Never carry extra workers

Do not allow other workers to ride on the equipment with you unless a second seat is fitted into the forklift. Do no use the forklift to lift people, as forklifts are designed to carry loads. If you need to lift a person, use only a secure work platform and cage.

Avoid standing or walking under a load, lifting mechanism, or forklift attachment, as loads can fall off on anyone positioned below it. Keep hands and feet clear away from the forklift mast, as a moving mast can cause serious injury.
